Wilmer Font Might Not Be The Answer, But He Could Be

The Wilmer Font trade will probably end up as a footnote to this season, but it's a move still worth making. He cost the Blue Jays no talent, only cash. They need arms and sending him out there with hope of catching lightning in a bottle is better than sending out a prospect who isn't ready and potentially harming their development.

The Blue Jays are already struggling to fill innings and they're about to ship out a few pitchers so the problem will only get worse if they don't add pieces.

You aren't going to acquire anybody better using only cash and they shouldn't be giving up young talent in a lost season.

He's not a guy I would count on to put up good numbers, but he has good stuff and had an excellent season in AAA as recently as 2017. He can pitch in the bullpen or fill-in in the rotation if needed. If he finds some of the success he had in AAA at the Major League level the Jays will still control him through the 2023 season.

Most lottery tickets like this won't work out, but some do, and for a rebuild to work you need some of those players to break out. When the cost is minimal cash, he's the type of guy a team like Toronto should be taking a chance on.
